The peer review system has been invoked several times during this debate, most recently by Christopher Noble. The implication has been that mainstream HIV/AIDS research is pristine because it has been through this process. However, the peer review system apparently failed the foundation of HIV research.

Years after the Gallo papers on HIV identification and isolation were published in Science magazine, an investigation by the US National Institutes of Health Office of Scientific Integrity led to a report listing 20 instances of "knowledgeable misreporting or errors" in the first and main Science paper. Eight of these errors, the report said, were serious enough to constitute scientific misconduct.

Why didn't the 4 Science papers go through the peer review system (and published to the scientific community) before such a monumental press-conference was made to the world?
